Antiviral API Solid State Research

As most antiviral drugs are manufactured and administered as solid form, the solid state properties of the active ingredient have a significant impact on the performance of the final drug product. Most drug substances can crystallize as different solid forms such as polycrystals, hydrates, solvates, and co-crystals. Therefore, determining the characteristics of the drug and screening out the optimal solid form is critical to the success of the drug delivery.

BOC Sciences is expanding its capabilities through solid-state research and development services to support antiviral API development programs. We have an extensive track record of solid-state studies of antiviral APIs designed to help you explore the true potential of the molecule. Through a combination of high- and medium- throughput screening services, state-of-the-art analytical techniques and experimental work at various scales, we help you obtain a complete range of solid forms of a drug substance.

What We Offer

  • With over years of experience in physicochemical characterization of solid-state APIs and advanced intermediates as well as screening for different API solid forms, our team of highly qualified scientists in solid-state science (crystallography, materials science, formulation) provides Quality by Design (QbD) approaches for small molecule antiviral APIs at different phases of pharmaceutical development
  • To support API solid form research and development projects, we apply high throughput screening techniques to rapidly discover new polycrystalline forms, pharmaceutical salts, solvates, co-crystals, particle size engineering and development or automated crystallization scale-up development
  • By integrating synthetic process development, solid state development, preformulation and formulation development, we provide a knowledge-based QbD method throughout the antiviral API development and manufacturing process
  • Screening for salts or co-crystals

Combining a diversity of factors such as solubility, hygroscopicity, chemical stability, melting point, crystallinity and suitability for production, our experts quickly select the salt/co-crystal that is most suitable for development into an antiviral agent.

  • Polymorph screening

BOC Sciences screens drug substances to identify and characterize novel polymorphic forms, hydrates and solvates, and to understand the relationships between different solid phases. We offer a wide range of types of studies depending on the stage of development of your active ingredients.

  • Crystallization screening and development

Our crystallography department is able to provide crystallization screening services which facilitate the development and registration process of antiviral drugs. Combining our years of project experience with leading-edge technology, we can offer effective crystallization screening for amorphous and hard-to-crystallize substances. After determining the best form of your drug for development, we develop a seamless strategy to design and optimize a robust, scalable crystallization process.

Our Work Procedure

  • Identify API-related polymorphic forms
  • Evaluate form transformations (transition temperature, critical water activity, etc.)
  • Determine thermodynamically stable forms
  • Process design and crystallization process optimization including optimizing process parameters to improve, for example, product yield, purity and bulk properties
